NOTE to the READER

The writer has mentioned three or four portraits in this third volume that we were not been able to obtain despite great effort and many enquiries. In addition some painters not named at all nevertheless show up along with their portraits with the biographies. This has caused many to be unsuitably or improperly indicated in print, so that we were necessitated to provide a precise indication by which the reader may easily be able to find the location of the portraits. One should not take this badly and consider that the passing of the author was the cause of this disarray.

List of the portraits of painters of the third volume.
